Measurement Based Care in an outpatient setting

With mental health concerns on the rise, innovative approaches to treatment are as valuable as ever. A recent study: “The Power of Measurement-Based Care in Remote Intensive Outpatient Programs” sheds light on a promising method of mental health care: Measurement-Based Care (MBC).

MBC is an evidence-based practice that involves routinely collecting patient-reported outcome measures to track progress and customize treatment. The process follows a "collect, share, and act" model, where clinicians regularly gather patient-reported outcomes measures, engage patients in discussions about their scores and symptom trends, and use the data to guide treatment planning and make meaningful changes to care.

Two pilot studies were conducted in a remote Intensive Outpatient IOP setting serving high-acuity teenagers and young adults, The results were promising, showing improved patient outcomes and high clinician engagement.

Patients receiving MBC are more likely to complete treatment

Patients who received MBC were significantly more likely to complete treatment successfully compared to those receiving treatment as usual. They also showed greater improvements in depression, anxiety, and psychological well-being scores. Clinicians achieved impressive survey completion rates, with many reporting that MBC added value to their clinical practice.

Outcomes measures for every patient

Several validated patient-reported outcome measures were used to assess patient progress, including scales for well-being, peer and family relationships, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms. The following patient reported outcome measures were used:

  • World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5)
  • PROMIS Pediatric Scales for Peer Relationships, Family Relationships, Depressive Symptoms, and Anxiety Symptoms
  • Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depression
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for anxiety

These measures allowed clinicians to tailor interventions to each patient's unique needs and progress.

Implementation to Measurement Based Care

The implementation process was carefully designed, including thorough preparation and planning, clinician training, feedback collection, and data analysis. Using process evaluation data, MBC deployment was repeatedly refined to enhance the clinical workflow and clinician experience.

The benefits of Measurement Based Care

The study showed that MBC had numerous benefits. It enhances treatment personalization, improves patient engagement, allows for early detection of issues, and enables data-driven decision making. By sharing data with patients, MBC fosters transparency and collaboration in the treatment process.
